Dear beloved friend,
Is your life joyful? I mean, not every moment, but overall?
Do you feel like your heart is light and open? Do you feel like you move through life with ease and flow? Do you feel abundant and loved? Do you feel calm and free in your mind?
I am certainly not a black belt with my joyfulness – that’s just par for the human journey, as we live among the world. But, I do have real moments and consecutive days of tangible, visceral contentment, ease, grounded calmness, pleasure, and connection. This is JOY.
With practice, personal, and spiritual growth I’ve gotten better and better at recovering faster when my fears, dramas, and traumas highjack me. And that’s the deal. Faster recover, less weight to lift, and more moments lived in my authentic joyfulness.
If your life doesn’t feel joyful, make some changes. Yes, maybe you do want to quit your job, move cities, start a workout routine, change your food, or pick new friends. If you catch yourself saying I’ll be happy when (blank) happens, there’s a clue that making change in your mind is the FIRST place to start.
The good news is that you can start right where you are, with exactly what you have. In fact, let’s begin making change towards more joyfulness right now. Let’s anchor in your calm and clear mind.
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, as if you’re blowing through a straw three times. Good.
Now, rub two finger tips together so gently and focused that you can feel the ridges of your fingertips.
And now, wiggle each and every toe. Really feel all of them, Stretch and move them.
By putting exquisite attention on these body sensations you have activated the part of your brain where your inner wise one lives. The right side of your brain. From this place ask yourself, 'Am I ready to live a more joyful life right now, regardless of circumstances?' If you’re saying heck yes, great. You’re on your way.
If you answered anything like, 'I can’t possibly live a joyful life with my current circumstances or until I achieve (blank)," ask yourself this second question.
'What are my fears, avoidances, and controlling behaviors costing me?'
Here are some examples that might get your mind going.
My fears are costing me joy because my mental chatter is so loud. I just worry about everything, for everyone.
My avoidance is costing me my relationship with my spouse because I just can’t seem to talk to them without triggering drama. So I avoid deeper interactions.
My controlling behaviors are costing me connection with my kids. I’m afraid that by the time they leave home our relationship will be fragmented and beyond repair.
